The issue of how to handle illegal immigrants who have been in the country for years is at the crux of a satisfactory bipartisan solution.

It is highly unlikely that any reasonable means of deporting 15 million+ illegal immigrants will be acceptable to anyone on humanitarian grounds.

I propose a solution to the amnesty problem.

As stated elsewhere:  Close the border, deport immediately any illegals with criminal records or violent history.  Any illegal in the country for less than 1 year is also subject to deportation.  Require all others to learn English, pay appropriate fines, pay back taxes and have record of reasonable employment history.  Enforce employer regulations.

Finally, granting amnesty will require the forfeiture of voting privileges for life.  This solves the real issue.  The Democrats want to add to their voters.  Few Republicans oppose reasonable humanitarian treatment, but oppose perverting the voting demographics of the country.

If adopted, my guess is that the Left will quickly lose interest in promoting amnesty for illegals.
